At a conference beginning this week, South Africa's ruling African National Congress Party, known as the ANC, is due to decide who will replace President Jacob Zuma as the party's next leader.
This decision will determine who will become South Africa's next president when Zuma's current term ends in 2019. Since Zuma assumed the presidency, the country's economic and political situation has gone from bad to worse. Corruption, which has always been part of South Africa's government patronage system, has now spun out of control and led to the virtual capture of the state by the Gupta business interests.
