Greek islanders protest in Athens against overcrowded migrant camps, 'inhuman' conditions

Mayors and residents from the Greek islands most severely affected by the migrant crisis demonstrated in Athens on Tuesday and asked for an immediate reduction in migrant numbers on the islands, calling living conditions in the overcrowded camps 'inhuman.'

More than 12,000 asylum-seekers have become stranded on five islands close to Turkey since the European Union agreed a deal with Ankara in March 2016 to shut down the route through Greece.

Migrants that have arrived since then are not allowed to move on to the mainland, creating a bottle-neck on the islands and testing their infrastructure.
