EU defending JCPOA

The European Union foreign policy chief has described the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran as a major international achievement. Federica Mogherini was speaking during a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the sidelines of an international security conference in Uzbekistan. She said the bloc will make sure that the deal is fully implemented by all sides. Following talks with Mogherini, Mohammad Javad Zarif called on the EU to take practical measures against the US over its attempts to hamper the implementation of the deal.

Syria says no to nuke

Syria's ambassador to the United Nations has blasted the West for supplying Israel with nuclear material, warning that the regime's nuclear capability threatens regional security. During a UN general assembly session, Bashar al-Jaafari accused the West of turning a blind eye to Israel’s possession of nuclear weapons which he said violated international nuclear treaties. He cited Germany’s export of nuclear-armed submarines to Israel as an example of how the West was contributing to the regime's development of its arsenal. Jaafari condemned Israel’s lack of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency over the issue. Israel is widely believed to be in possession of hundreds of nuclear bombs.

UN urges Saudi not to block Yemen aid

The United Nations says Saudi Arabia is blocking much-needed aid deliveries to Yemen amid an aggravating humanitarian crisis in the Arab country. The world body calls on the Saudis to lift the blockade of all ports in Yemen for humanitarian and commercial imports. The UN stresses that the Kingdom’s re-opening of a port in the Yemeni city of Aden is not enough for the needs of people. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization has raised the alarm about the catastrophic consequences of the Saudi embargo on its southern neighbor.

US-South Korea drills

The United States and South Korea have started joint naval drills by deploying three US aircraft carriers in waters off South Korea's eastern coast. The war games are set to last for four days. This is the first time since 2007 that three US carrier strike groups are carrying out an operation together in the Western Pacific. The military exercise comes as US President Donald Trump continues his trip to Asia which has been dominated by discussions over the North Korean nuclear activities. Such military maneuvers by the US have been a serious bone of contention between Washington and Pyongyang. North Korea sees the exercises as a rehearsal for invading the East Asian country.

Brazilians angry at austerity

Thousands of Brazilian workers and members of trade unions flood the streets of Sao Paulo in protest at the government’s austerity measures and new labor laws. Some protesters called for the resignation of President Michel Temer who has proposed to make changes in the country's social security system. As part of Temer's package of reforms, the retirement age will be lifted from the current average of about 54 years to 65 years. He came to power in August 2016 following the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff for manipulating public finances.

Saudi airstrikes on Yemen

Saudi Arabia has intensified its aerial strikes against Yemen, hitting multiple targets in its latest raids across the country. Saudi warplanes carried out two air raids on the Bawadi Island in Hudaydah province, killing at least 8 fishermen and injuring eight others. Two children and a woman were killed in a similar strike on the town of Razih, in Sa’ada province. Elsewhere in the capital Sana’a, the fighter jets targeted a residential area near the Ministry of Defense, leaving at least three civilians wounded. Saudi Arabia started a devastating war on Yemen in March 2015. Since then, more than 13,000 Yemenis, most of them civilians, have been killed. The war has drawn widespread condemnation from rights groups.

Iran deal ‘non-negotiable’

US President Donald Trump has been threatening to withdraw from the nuclear agreement signed between Tehran and the P5+1 group, calling for the renegotiation of the deal. But Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations tells a General Assembly meeting that the 2015 nuclear accord known as the JCPOA is non-negotiable. Press TV’s Susan Modaress reports from New York.

TPP trade deal

Members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, TPP, have agreed to proceed with a new version of the trade deal without the United States. Trade ministers from 11 Pacific Rim countries said in a statement that they remained committed to the core elements of the deal. The agreement was reached following talks on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam. The announcement was initially scheduled for Friday but was delayed after Canada raised last-minute concerns. It has been described as a rebuke of US President Donald Trump who pulled out of the TPP deal earlier this year. The TPP aims to eliminate tariffs on industrial and farm products across the 11-member bloc including Australia, Japan, Malaysia, and New Zealand.
