The Iran women’s national sepak takraw team has has put in convincing performances at the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) World Cup Sepak Takraw Championship in India, and ranked third at the end of the international event.
On Saturday, the Iranian squad, which had thrashed the hosts 2-0 (21-15 and 23-21) in a quarterfinal encounter at the GMC Balayogi Indoor Stadium in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, the previous day, lost to the strong Thai squad in the semi-finals.
The ISTAF World Cup Sepak Takraw Championship started on November 2, and finished on November 5, 2017.
The tournament brought together men’s national sepaktakraw teams from Bangladesh, Brazil, Brunei, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore and Thailand.
Women’s national sepak takraw teams from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam were in action as well.
Sepak takraw, or kick volleyball, is a sport native to Southeast Asia. It differs from the similar sport of volleyball in its use of a rattan ball and only allowing players to use their feet, knee, chest and head to touch the ball. It is a popular sport in Southeast Asia.
