UN chief Guterres in the Gaza Strip

Described as the world’s largest outdoor prison, the Gaza Strip has been under an all-out Israeli blockade since 2007. Various high-ranking United Nations officials, who traveled to the besieged Gaza Strip in the past, contented themselves with reading out statements in solidarity with its residents. But lukewarm condemnations of Israel’s decade-long siege of the Strip have failed to bring to an end the sufferings of Palestinians there. Quite the contrary, the humanitarian situation has dramatically deteriorated in Gaza. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres who took over from Ban Ki-moon in January, has for the first time visited the strip. Shocked by the dire living conditions of the people, Guterres called for the Israeli blockade of Gaza to be lifted.

Syria war's new twist

The Syria war is getting complicated by the day...but for the anti-Syria countries involved in the conflict including the US. American officials say their patrols in northern Syria have been fired on several times from areas controlled by Turkish-backed  militants. Washington has condemned the attack saying it conveyed the incident to Turkey.

Colonel Ryan Dillon, the spokesman for the US-led coalition, says the attacks targeted patrols flying US flags in the Manbij area, a flashpoint city between Turkey-backed militants and  Kurdish fighters supported by the US. With Washington getting sucked deeper and deeper into what is called the Syria vortex, it's difficult to predict what the war has in store for the US.
