US President Donald Trump should “come before the bar of justice,” in the US House of Representatives, says a Democratic member of the lower chamber of US Congress.
Al Green warned on Saturday that he would file his own articles of impeachment against the president if Republicans do not act on the one already filed over obstruction of justice.
“The president has to come before the bar of justice, and the only place that that bar of justice exists is the House of Representatives. Each member of the House can file a resolution for impeachment,” the Texas congressman told MSNBC.
Green, who has co-sponsored an article of impeachment by California Democratic Representative Brad Sherman, had called for impeachment of the president in May.
“I was proud to join Representative Sherman with his articles of impeachment, but I will be filing articles unless of course the Judiciary Committee acts on what’s been filed already. If they should then there won’t be a need,” Green (pictured above) said.
The House Judiciary Committee, currently in control of the GOP, has previously considered articles of impeachment for former Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.
‘Outside’ probe
The president has been accused of obstruction of justice by dismissing FBI Director James Comey, who was investigating his possible collusion with Russia ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
Congressional committees are also investigating to find out whether the Russian government coordinated with Trump associates during the 2016 campaign and transition.
Meanwhile, Trump administration officials are under pressure over new revelations this week about a meeting between Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian attorney at Trump Tower in the summer of 2016.
Trump Jr. (pictured above) arranged the meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya and took along his brother-in-law, Jared Kushner, and then-Trump campaign Paul Manafort to get damaging information about the campaign of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
“Recent revelations, coupled with [the] president’s unprecedented campaign of dishonesty and secrecy, give greater urgency to the need for House Republicans [to] bring a vote to the floor immediately to establish an outside, independent commission,” said the spokeswoman for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
