Iran suffers 1st defeat in FIVB U-21 world championship
Iran’s national under-21 volleyball team has sustained its first loss at the second round of the 2017 Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in the Czech Republic.
On Tuesday, the Iranian squad, which had downed the Argentine team 3-2 (25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 18-25 and 15-12) at the end of a thrilling Pool C match two days earlier, went down to the Cuban side 2-3 (22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-13 and 8-15) in a Pool E encounter at DRFG Arena in the southwestern Czech city of Brno.
“It was a really long match. We played more and more stably. The main goal was victory,” Cuba’s head coach Nicolas Vives Coffigny said after the match.
Cuba’s captain Adrian Eduardo Goide said, “I think we had a really good game and we fought hard to win the match, which was difficult against Iran.”
“Cuba is playing a different style of volleyball from ours. They do not play tactical volleyball. We can play with each other at 50% to 50%, but unfortunately we lost today,” Iranian head coach Behrouz Ataei commentd.
Rasoul Aghchehli, captain of Iran, said, “The match was very hard today and I must say Cuba has a really strong team.”
The young Iranian sportsmen will take on counterparts from China in their second Pool E match on Wednesday.
