US President Donald Trump has only worsened the situation in Syria and has put his country on a path towards military conflict with Russia and Iran, says an American analyst.
Chicago-based author and radio host Stephen Lendman made the remarks while discussing warnings by Democratic Senator Chris Murphy about a possible war between the three sides due to the Trump administration’s unclear Syria policies.
"I think we're getting closer and closer to open conflict with Iran and Russia, and the American public needs to know that we're moving very fast toward what could be another war inside the Middle East," Murphy told CNN on Tuesday.
The remarks came two days after a US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian Sukhoi SU-22 aircraft, which was conducting an operation against Daesh terrorists on the outskirts of Syria’s northern city of Raqqah.
Lendman told Press TV on Wednesday that Murphy was “concerned about what really the entire rest of the US Senate seems to be very dismissive of.”
Murphy shared the same worries as his Republican colleague Senator Rand Paul in thinking that the US was already losing a lot of money by waging unnecessary conflicts around the world, the analyst argued.
Noting that the US had been involved in an increasing number of direct military confrontations with the Syrian government’s military forces, Lendman warned that Washington was on a track to get itself involved in the conflict more deeply.
“What America has done to Syria is not a civil war, it is falsely reported,” he argued. “It is US aggression, it was [former President Barack] Obama’s war and it is now Trump’s.”
“He has promised to be non-interventionist, he has been anything but,” the analyst continued. “He has escalated conflicts that he inherited.”
In April, Trump authorized US a Navy warships to strike a Syrian military airbase over unsubstantiated claim that fighter jets operating from the base had carried out chemical attacks on civilians.
Lendman said Trump has been aggressive towards Iran but has tried to strike better relations with Russia only to be blocked by Congress, who would rather see the US remain an enemy to its Cold War foe.
“If America and Russia ever get into a conflict, the world’s two dominant nuclear powers, it could be worse than a catastrophe,” he further warned.
“America wages endless wars… I see nothing in prospect that tells me there is any chance for ending them anytime soon,” the author concluded.
