These are some of the headlines we are tracking for you in this episode of On the News Line:

US anti-Russia sanctions

US President Barack Obama last week announced a new set of sanctions against Russia. The move was in response to an alleged hacking campaign by Moscow, which Washington claims was aimed at influencing the recent American presidential election. Russia has rejected the US claims that Moscow interfered with the election, saying Washington has nothing to prove those allegations. Nevertheless, many believe Obama’s move could create serious hurdles for the incoming administration of US President-elect Donald Trump.

2016 underreported stories

As 2016 ended, it may be worth now to have a look at some headlines that did not receive the coverage they deserved by the mainstream media. The influx of refugees into Europe was one of them. The political upheavals in Latin America in most of which the hand of the United States was visible was another story that did not receive the coverage it deserved. Last year was also the ninth consecutive year in which the Gaza Strip remained under Israel’s devastating siege, again not much covered by mainstream media.

Russia’s Syria peace initiative

The UN Security Council on Saturday unanimously adopted a resolution supporting an initiative brokered by Russia and Turkey to end the devastating war in Syria. The Council members also called for the swift delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians across the war-torn country. This followed the announcement of a ceasefire in Syria by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, already seen as a major breakthrough that many hope would help restore peace to Syria.
