Hackers release medical records of 26 athletes

Hackers have made public confidential medical documents of 26 individuals including Olympic champions Mohamed Farah and Rafael Nadal.

The list includes names of athletes from Argentina, Belgium, Burundi, Canada, Denmark, France, Britain, Hungary, Spain and the US.

The documents were stolen from a World Anti-Doping Agency database and were published online by Fancy Bears hacking group. It is the 4th tranche of documents released by the group.

The latest release suggests Farah, who retained his 5,000 and 10,000 metres Olympic titles at the Rio Games, was granted therapeutic use exemption, or TUE, on two occasions.

The documents relating to Nadal also show exemptions in 2009 and 2012 for the use of banned drug betamethasone. A TUE is an exemption that allows an athlete to take a prescribed substance or have treatment that is otherwise banned. Fancy Bears say TUEs are licenses for doping.

Meanwhile, referring to the leak, Russian President Vladimir Putin has slammed the International Paralympic Committee’s decision to bar Russian Paralympians from competing in Rio.

Putin made the remarks in an address to Russian Paralympians during a special ceremony in the Kremlin. The event celebrated the athletes’ achievements at special competitions organized for them on home soil after they were banned from the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
