- Israel plans to beef up its military presence in the occupied East-Jerusalem al-Quds. The announcement has infuriated Palestinians living in the flashpoint city. Tel Aviv wants to build five new stations with 1200 officers to be deployed there. Tel Aviv has recently intensified its crackdown on Palestinians.
- Upwards of twenty people have reportedly been injured in a huge fire which engulfed a large apartment complex in the US state of Maryland. The midnight fire, believed to be caused by explosion, tore through the complex located in Silver Spring, a city in Montgomery County.
- Australia has dismissed newly-released data showing human rights violations, including child abuse at its offshore detention centers. Australia’s immigration minister, Peter Dutton, accused asylum seekers held in Pacific camps of making false allegations of sexual assaults. He said asylum seekers are also deliberately harming themselves in order to get into Australia.
- US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has hit back at her Republican rival Donald Trump after he suggested that gun rights advocates could stop her from appointing Supreme Court justices. She warned Trump that his words will have tremendous consequences for him.
- The planned deployment of an advanced US missile system in South Korea continues to draw opposition. A petition against the move has received 100,000 signatures on the White House website. Residents of the site where the US batteries are to be deployed have worked hard to collect the signatures.
- Saudi bombers have conducted fresh airstrikes on Yemeni cities. The warplanes struck residential areas, an airport, an academic center and a TV station in the capital, Sana’a. There are no immediate reports of casualties. Three people had already been killed in a previous air raid on the capital.
- France says wildfires near the Mediterranean port city of Marseille have been brought under control. 1800 firefighters have been mobilized to southern France to fight the flames. The wildfires have forced the evacuation of over one thousand people in the town of Vitrolles, north of Marseille.
- Germany is planning to propose a ban on the full face veil for women in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Europe. The German interior minister is going to propose the ban. He says full face Burqa and Niqab can increase security risks.
