Turkish officials say those who played a role in the recent abortive coup attempt in Turkey are resisting arrests, prompting clashes at two major locations in the country.

Reports on Sunday said clashes erupted between officers and security forces in the central city of Konya as putschists resisted arrest during an operation in an air base in the city.

"We are able to confirm that there are clashes at the air base in Konya between the security forces and putschists resisting arrest,” a Turkish official said without elaborating.

Sources said a similar incident happened in Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen airport, adding, however, that the officers finally surrendered.

They said security forces fired warning shots and some coup plotters resisted although they did not return fire and eventually gave in. Sabiha Gokcen is Istanbul’s second largest airport and lies in the Asian side of the city.

Officials said the situation in the two locations were under control.

Turkey began a harsh crackdown on those deemed to have played a role in the coup attempt which began late on Friday and ended a day later. President Recep Tayyib Erdogan said Saturday that the coup plotters would pay a heavy price for the move, which left some 290, including 104 putschists, killed.
