Turks rally in support of government after failed coup

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Thousands of people have rallied in several Turkish cities in support of the government, following Friday’s failed coup attempt by the military. More than 260 people including coup plotters were killed in the burst of violence. The government has pledged to punish those behind the move.
     
  • Meanwhile, the United States and Germany have urged Turkey to deal with the coup plotters according to law. President Barack Obama also called on Turkish leaders to avoid actions that would result in further violence. The Turkish government has already detained thousands of judges and military personnel over Friday’s putsch.
     
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the US to extradite opposition figure Fethullah Gulen. US Secretary of State John Kerry, however, said the White house has not received any official extradition requests. Kerry has also rejected accusations leveled by Turkey about Washington’s role in the attempted coup.
     
  • Syrian army forces have liberated a strategic town in Latakia province. Government forces took full control of the town of Kinsabba after heavy clashes with foreign-backed militants. The army has also managed to establish control over Shalaf and Toubal castles and several strategic hilltops.
     
  • Yemen's Ansarullah movement and allied army units have inflicted heavy casualties on forces loyal to the former regime in the province of Ta’izz. Yemeni fighters launched a ballistic missile at a military base in Bab el-Mandeb region leaving some 180 people dead including foreign mercenaries.
     
  • Staying with Yemen, three people have been killed in a US drone strike in Shabwa province . The drone attacked a vehicle carrying suspected al-Qaeda militants. Washington claims its drones target militants, but local sources say civilians have been the main victims of such attacks.
     
  • Top Bahraini cleric Ayatollah Isa Qassim will go on trial next month on charges of collecting funds illegally and money laundering. The head of Bahrain’s public prosecution made the announcement but did not name the suspect. However, sources close to the case said the cleric was Sheikh Qassim.
     
  • The head of the far-right National Front Party in France urges the Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to quit over the deadly truck attack in Nice. Marine Le Pen says France is the only country to have witnessed 250 fatalities in terror attacks over the past 18 months.
