Syrian forces and foreign-backed militants engage in heavy fighting in Aleppo

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Syrian forces and foreign-backed militants are engaged in heavy fighting in the northwestern city of Aleppo. At least 75 members of the al-Nusra Front terrorist group have been killed in the clashes. Aleppo is Syria’s largest city which has been divided into militant-held and government-held areas since mid-2012.
  • Andrea Leadsom withdraws from the race for Britain’s next prime minister. She says, she does not have sufficient support to lead a strong government. The Conservative Party has to choose a new leader after David Cameron resigned following last month’s UK referendum to leave the European Union. 
  • Dozens of football fans have been arrested in clashes during and after the Euro 2016 final match in Paris. Violence erupted after French and Portuguese supporters were refused entry into the fan zone, already packed to its 90000 capacity. Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd.
  • Mourners in Bosnia and Herzegovina have laid to rest 127 newly-identified victims of the Srebrenica massacre. They were buried in the town of Srebrenica where Bosnian Serbs killed eight-thousand Muslims over the course of four days back in 1995. The Srebrenica massacre has been described as the worst ethnic cleansing in Europe since World War Two. 
  • South Koreans have gathered near the US embassy in Seoul to protest Washington’s planned deployment of an advanced missile system in their country. The US and South Korea say the deployment is a deterrent against North Korea’s nuclear arms. The North has condemned the move and promised to take action.
  • Human Rights Watch has slammed Saudi Arabia for conducting airstrikes on Yemen’s civilian economic structures including factories and warehouses. A report by Human Rights Watch has examined in detail 17 such airstrikes by the Saudis which have killed one-hundred-thirty Yemeni civilians. Saudi Arabia began its war on Yemen over a year ago. 
  • The Indian-controlled Kashmir continues to reel under a new wave of violence, following the killing of a pro-independence figure by Indian troops. Five more people including a teenage girl have been killed in overnight clashes, brining the total death toll to 23. Scores of others have also been injured.
  • Fresh rallies have been held across the US against police brutality. The recent killings of two African-Americans triggered an angry public response. New York City, Atlanta and Baton Rouge are among the cities where rallies were held. Police made more than two hundred arrests during violent protests on Saturday night.
