Obama meets families, survivors of Orlando shooting tragedy

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • US President Barack Obama is meeting with bereaved families and survivors of the country's worst mass shooting in modern history. Obama was welcomed by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer upon arrival in the city. The president then went to the Amway Center where he consoled the victims and their families.
  • Pakistan has taken the case of the U-S drone strikes on the country to the U-N Human Rights Council. Islamabad has requested action against the U-S for killing Pakistani civilians in drone attacks. The airstrikes have reportedly killed up to 4-thousand Pakistani civilians since 2004.
  • The United Nations secretary general has expressed concern over an intensifying crackdown on opposition groups and dissidents in Bahrain. Ban Ki-moon said recent decisions by Bahrain's rulers are aimed at restricting political opposition in that country. Last week, Manama suspended the country's largest opposition group al-Wefaq and detained a prominent government critic.
  • The Iraqi army, with the assistance of Popular Mobilization Units, is advancing on Daesh-held areas in the city of Fallujah. The army has safeguarded areas in south as it’s moving on towards the city center. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization has warned about the outbreak of diseases among civilians trapped there.
  • New clashes in Kashmir have left five pro-independence fighters and two Indian soldiers dead in two days. The Indian army said four Kashmiris and one soldier were killed in a firefight near the border with Pakistan on Thursday. A gun battle on Wednesday also left one Kashmiri and a soldier dead.
  • Britain’s Labour Party lawmaker, Jo Cox, has died after being shot and stabbed near Leeds. Cox was attacked close to her office in her own constituency in Bristall. The attack was reportedly carried out by a man shouting “Britain First”. A 52-year-old man is arrested in connection with the incident.
  • More tension looms large in France as the hard-line labor union says it would stage more street marches against the government-proposed labor law reforms. The C-G-T union accused the government of trying to discredit legitimate protest. President Francois Hollande has threatened to ban further marches.
  • Egypt says the black box of the doomed EgyptAir plane has been found and pulled out of the Mediterranean Sea. The investigation committee said the flight recorder has been damaged. The announcement comes a day after Cairo said it obtained images from the wreckage of the plane that crashed last month.
