Tomatoes are meant to be eaten. But what do you do with the ones that are bruised or over-ripe? Well, you could throw them at your neighbors or perhaps even strangers. And that’s exactly what this festival in Colombia is all about.
Thousands of eager participants have flocked to the town of Sutamarchan to throw tomatoes at one another. The region is known as one of the largest producers in all of Latin America.
More than 35,000 kilos of over-ripe tomatoes were used for this year’s event which lasted three days.
Many people also participated in a tomato-eating contest. There was even a race to find the largest tomato. Similar events are held in Spain, Costa Rica and the United States.
