Turkey army shells Kurdish positions in Syria for 3rd day in a row

The Turkish army is presses ahead with its shelling of Kurdish positions in northern Syria.

  • The Turkish army is pressing ahead with its shelling of Kurdish fighters' positions in northern Syria. Turkey has been bombing the region for three straight days. Meanwhile, Ankara has once again criticized Russia for its military intervention in Syria, warning Moscow of the consequences of its move. 
  • Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says Moscow is not looking for an indefinite military presence in Syria. Medvedev says Moscow pursues a limited and concrete objective in the country. Meanwhile, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has said his country intervened in Syria because the measures taken by the US-led coalition were inefficient.
  • Iran says any military intervention in Syria without the government’s approval will further complicate the crisis in the Arab country. Iran's Foreign ministry spokesman Hossein Jaberi-Ansari says the continuation of foreign interventionist policies in Syria will have grave consequences for the entire region. 
  • Syria’s Democratic Union Party rejects Turkey’s demands that Kurdish fighters withdraw from border areas north of Aleppo. The PYD says Ankara seems to prefer Nusra terrorists on its borders rather than Kurdish fighters or Syrian soldiers. It slammed Ankara’s intervention in Syria’s affairs and said Syrians will resist any Turkish invasion. 
  • Israeli forces attack a Palestinian refugee camp in the occupied city of Ramallah. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, nearly 30 Palestinians were injured in the clashes that followed. Three others were detained by Israeli forces. Violent incidents like this have increased in the occupied West Bank in recent months.
  • Ukraine has banned the transit of Russian trucks across its territory amid an escalating trade war between the two countries. Kiev says it took the decision because Moscow violated bilateral agreements and international trade rules. Russia has taken a retaliatory measure, banning Ukrainian trucks inside the country. 
  • The Indian-controlled Kashmir is observing a complete shutdown in protest against the killing of pro-independence activists by security forces there. Businesses and educational institutions remained closed throughout the Himalayan region. Two people including a female student were killed by Indian troops on Sunday. 
  • The United Nations has warned that around 49 million people in southern Africa could be affected by drought. The UN says the drought has been worsened by the El Nino weather condition. It says around fourteen million people are already facing hunger in the region.
