Russia says ready to give Iran planes, loan

Russia says it is ready to supply Iran with over a dozen Tu-204SM planes as well as a key state export loan in the near future.

Russia announced on Tuesday that it is preparing to supply Iran with over a dozen Tu-204SM planes as well as a key state export loan in the near future.

"The Russian side is ready to offer Tu-204SM aircraft to our Iranian colleagues. Currently, talks are proceeding with the Iranian Kish Airlines on the supply of 10-15 planes of this type," Russia's Ministry of Industry and Trade announced after a meeting between the ministry's head, Denis Manturov, and Iranian Minister of Industries and Business Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh.

The two ministers met in Tehran a day after the opening of the three-day Russia-Iran Trade and Industrial Dialogue in the Iranian capital.

In a separate development, Manturov told journalists after meeting Nematzadeh that Moscow may give Iran a state export loan in the amount of $5 billion in 2016.

“We are talking about granting a state loan, naturally under the Iranian government’s guarantee…I think that if all the formalities can be agreed upon in the first quarter of next year, then next year part of it may be provided,” he said as reported by Sputnik news agency.

Preliminary agreements on granting Iran the $5-billion loan were signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Tehran at the end of November.

Officials in Moscow had earlier said that the loan will be used for infrastructure projects, mostly likely electrical power generation and the development of railways.

The measure is expected to boost trade between the two countries. The target is $10 billion, from the current $1.6 billion, Russia’s media reported.
