Press TV has conducted an interview with Mohammad Hassan Khani, professor at Imam Sadiq University in Tehran, to discuss the recent remarks made by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Some Important issues were pointed out by Ayatollah Khamenei. Talk to us about these recent comments.
Khani: Well, what we heard today from Iran’s Supreme Leader is again some kind of reflection of how Iran, Iranians and Iranian political leaders are looking at the United States even at the era of post-[nuclear] deal.
I mean there are those who believe that maybe the nuclear deal between Iran and 5+1 has somehow brought Iran to a kind of solution with its problems with the United States and maybe we are going to somehow see the friendship or alliance between Tehran and Washington. But what we heard today is again a reflection of how Iran sees America as an enemy and how the long history of enmity between Iran and the United States and the history of American hostility towards Iran have affected the Iranian mentality and we surely are far from seeing Iran and the United States to work together in the international arena and in the region as two close countries.
Press TV: The leader also pointed to the nuclear negotiations. He stated that it was Iranian nation’s power and perseverance that forced the P5+1 group of countries to engage in negotiations with Iran. Elaborate on that for us as well.
Khani: This is again another important issue in my view. You know just a couple of years ago, the Western world in general and especially the United Sates were in a position not to recognize Iranian legitimate right to peaceful nuclear industry and not to recognize Iran as a regional power.
For the past thirty years or so, there has been somehow a denial from the West and the United States in particular to recognize the Iranian legitimate security concerns and to accept Iranian positive role in the region. But now we are seeing they are sitting [down] with Iran, recognizing the Iranian legitimate nuclear rights and now inviting Iran actually to forums which are plans or could be plans for solving part of the Middle East’s problems and Middle Eastern crises. So they are somehow accepting and recognizing Iranian role and this is, in my view, maybe a good step forward but for Iran is not enough yet.
