Egypt sentences 7 anti-government protesters to death

Egypt

Egypt has sentenced more than a dozen dissidents to death or jail terms of up to ten years as it intensifies crackdown on the opposition.

Seven protesters were sentenced to death over their alleged involvement in violence during an anti-government rally in the northeastern city of Banha. Most of the defendants were members of the Muslim Brotherhood movement. Elsewhere in the port city of Alexandria, six anti-government protesters were sentenced to jail terms of up to ten years over allegations of involvement in torching a police outpost. This comes a day after regime forces shot dead four Brotherhood members, accusing them of planning an attack on security forces. Hundreds of Brotherhood affiliates have been sentenced to death since the ouster of the country’s first democratically-elected president Mohamed Morsi.
