One person has been confirmed dead while 63 others remain missing more than four days after a landslide in China’s northwestern Shaanxi Province.
Rescuers said the body of the victim of the landslide, which occurred last Wednesday, was found on Sunday from a mine in Shanyang County’s Shangluo City.
Ten people had escaped unaided from under the debris while four others were drawn out by rescuers and transferred to hospital.
Rescuers said the huge volume of mud and rubble at the site, accompanied by the high risk of a second landslide, has hindered the search and rescue operation.
Official statistics from China’s State Administration of Work Safety show that in the first half of 2015, there were 139,000 industrial accidents across the country, resulting in 26,000 deaths, down 7.5 percent year-on-year.
Accidents in China’s coal mines killed 931 people last year while similar incidents took between 6,000 and 7,000 lives a decade ago.
China enforces a strict regime on work safety and environmental management.
