Pentonville prison bosses unaware they had an inmate in cell

Prison 'did not appear to know' it had prisoner in its cells

Concerns have been raised at prison bosses who appeared not to know of the presence of a prisoner in their jail.

High court judge, Justice Newton said he was “less than impressed” about the incident which took place in Pentonville prison, north London when salesman Mohammed Chaudhry failed to attend a hearing at a high court regarding a case involving the disappearance of a child.

Pentonville prison criticized for falsely imprisoning Mohammed Chaudhry

“I am less than impressed with what went on at Pentonville prison,” said Newton. “Pentonville prison did not appear to know he was in there. It seemed to be chaotic and caused a great deal of court delay and court time and public expenditure to be wasted whilst the prison staff tried to identify where he was.”

Judge Newton had kept Chaudhry in custody during the investigation into the case of his missing nephew, Mani Dad. He was brought to court on Wednesday and released on bail pending a further hearing on 16 July.

Chaudhry was “effectively kept falsely in prison”, according to the Newton who said “it is most unsatisfactory”.  He continued stating “it is not an isolated incident. It is necessary for those that are responsible for people in custody to understand that court orders must be complied with. Prisoners must be produced.”

A request was made by the judge for a possible explanation by the governor of Pentonville prison at the hearing but the institute responded saying no one was available to attend the session for “emergency operational reasons”.

Chaudhry ‘s nephew, Mani went missing from Poland six months ago and is thought to be with his British father in the UK. The child’s mother, Leyla Dad has been told that Chaudhry may know the whereabouts of her son and his family may have even “managed to conceal” him.

Legal proceedings under the terms of the 1980 Hague convention on civil aspects of international child abduction have been launched to locate the missing child.
