A cyber attack against Polish flag carrier LOT has grounded over 1,400 passengers and canceled some 10 flights at Warsaw's Frederic Chopin Airport.
The attack took place at about 4:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) on Sunday, and targeted the ground operations system of the airline, the carrier said in a statement.
The "IT attack" caused disruptions in preparing flight plans and departures, the statement noted.
In an interview with TVN 24 television, LOT spokesman Adrian Kubicki described the incident, which was resolved in 5 hours, as the "first attack of its kind."
Over 1,400 passengers, scheduled to travel to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen and domestic destinations, were affected by the accident, Kubicki said, adding that a commission will investigate the attack.
Concerns are on the rise over cyber attacks against aviation systems and planes, particularly with a new upsurge in the number of Internet-connected airliners. There are fears that hackers may be able to use the Internet to take control of planes remotely.
In December 2014, the International Civil Aviation Organization said cyber crime is seriously threatening flights’ safety, promising to set up a "security culture" protecting travelers against any disastrous incident.
