Heavily armed militants have shot dead at least five people in three separate violent incidents in the troubled southwestern Pakistan, security sources say.
In the first incident, masked assailants on Saturday sprayed at least two men with bullets at a barber shop in Mano Jan area of the southwestern city of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan Province. Sources said the attackers managed to flee the scene before the arrival of security forces.
Separately, two other people were gunned down by unidentified attackers in Double Road area of the volatile city.
Another person was shot dead near the Eastern Bypass area of the city.
The violent incidents come two days after militants killed at least four policemen in the Pashtoonabad area of Quetta.
Pakistani law enforcement agencies have detained nearly 250 suspects in connection with the ongoing killings across the militancy-riddled region. Security forces also seized a large amount of ammunition and arms from the suspects’ hideouts.
Quetta and other parts of Balochistan have seen a surge in attacks over the past months.
Taliban militants and some Baloch militant groups have carried out several ambushes against militants as well as security forces despite frequent offensives by the Pakistani military.
Pakistani intelligence officials say members of the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) have been involved in subversive activities, including bombings and targeted killings, across the region.
Senior civilian and military officials in Islamabad have long accused India of fueling militancy in Pakistan’s Balochistan Province.
