In every four American children, more than one is exposed to gun violence before reaching the age of 18 either as a victim or a witness, a new Study shows.
The large study, whose results were released in the journal Pediatrics, also show that one in 33 American kids falls victim during incidents involving guns or knives, MedPage Today reported on Monday.
Totally, the number of the kids exposed to violence involving weapons stands at 17.5 million, a number that surpasses that of children suffering from diabetes or cancer.

Researchers believe such experiences can lead to depression, anxiety, trauma, and other mental health disorders.
“Millions of children are being exposed to violence involving weapons, and many of them are victimized by guns and knives, with an elevated risk of trauma and serious injury,” said lead study author Kimberly Mitchell, a scientist at the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire.
During the study, data from 4,114 children aged 2 to 17 years old was analysed. Fifteen percent of the participants were African Americans and 19 percent Latinos.
“This study represents typical American kids at a range of incomes and shows that their exposure to violence is very widespread and common,” said Dr. Denise Dowd, a specialist in pediatric emergency medicine at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Missouri.
