At least 13 people have lost their lives as a result of a severe heat wave in Pakistan, a week after hot weather killed nearly 2,500 people in neighboring India.

Meraj Ahmed, a Pakistani rescue official, said Sunday that the people died while at a ceremony in the small town of Sehwan in Jamshoro District of Sindh Province.

The temperature rose to 46 degrees Celsius.

Harsh weather claims the lives of thousands of people across the South Asia region every summer.

People in the southern desert regions of Pakistan are particularly vulnerable to heat waves, where temperature sometimes reaches 50 degrees Celsius.

Almost 2,500 people died in April and May as a result of a heat wave in India’s southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telagana, which experienced their highest sustained summer temperatures in 12 years.
