Iran’s national water polo team has won the 5th edition of the FINA World Men’s Water Polo Development Trophy held in the Iranian capital of Tehran after overpowering their strong rivals Uruguay 13-5 in the final.
After impressive wins against Guatemala, Indonesia, Tunisia and Austria in Group B, the Iranians were the favorites to win the Friday final against Group A winners Uruguay.
The vocal crowd at the packed Shahid Shiroudi Stadium helped Iran win the first quarter 2-0.
The team continued its great performance with another three goals in the second quarter to make it 5-0.
The two sides then settled for a 3-3 draw in the third frame. However, it was all about Iran again in the last quarter as they outscored the Latin American powerhouse 5-2 to complete their crushing 13-5 win and grab the tournament’s gold medal for the first time.
Ten teams from around the world, where the sport is seen as less popular, had come to Tehran to take part in the six-day event, which finished on May 29.
