Team Iran has taken a firm first step at the 5th edition of the FINA World Men's Water Polo Development Trophy held in the Iranian capital of Tehran.
The Iranians were up against Guatemala on Sunday at the Shahid Shiroudi Stadium and thrashed their rivals with 20 goals against the visitors’ 2. Iran will next face Indonesia on Tuesday May 26.
Ten teams compete in the 6 day event and Iran are in group B alongside Austria, Tunisia, Indonesia and Guatemala.
Group A participants include Azerbaijan, Kuwait, Morocco, Malta and Uruguay.
The competition was launched in 2007 with the aim of developing the sport in the world, especially among countries where it is not yet popular.
Kuwait held the first two editions of the event in 2007 and 2009 before once again hosting it in 2013. Saudi Arabia also held the competition once in 2011.
