Egyptian authorities have executed six militants who were convicted of killing police officers, police sources say.
The six men were hanged in a Cairo prison, anonymous officials were quoted by AP as saying on Sunday.
Last March, a military tribunal upheld the death sentences against the six men after a trial in which they were convicted of carrying out an attack on a police van killing three soldiers, and also attacking an army checkpoint, which led to the death of six other soldiers, in March 2014.
The attacks came months after a military coup against Mohammad Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically-elected president.
According to prosecutors, they were members of the Sinai Peninsula-based Ansar Beit al-Maqdis militant group, which has changed its name to Wilayat Sinai after swearing allegiance to ISIL Takfiri terrorist group.
In March 2014, a number of militants were busted when police and soldiers attacked their safe house north of Cairo.
Their execution came a day after an Egyptian court sentenced Morsi to death on charges of endangering national security by leaking state secrets to Qatar and escaping from prison during the country’s revolution against long-time dictator, Hosni Mubarak, in 2011.
The militants have claimed responsibility for most attacks in Sinai.
