In the longest State of the Union speech ever, President Donald Trump sought to persuade the nation that the country is "winning so much" although polls say 60% of voters think the nation is worse off than when he retook office one year ago.
The last year has been defined by political violence, with another assassination attempt against Trump thwarted last week, while immigration raids have brought unprecedented and unpopular violent arrests and even killings to American communities.
Nobody voted for this because this is just a flagrant abuse of every kind of institutional respect for the law that America was built on.
This is supposed to be a country of rules and norms and order. And when you see American citizens, people who immigrated here and have been voting citizens of this country for decades, being deported to a third country, being deported to somewhere that they were never from; that also isn't the United States.
We have people in South Sudan, for crying out loud.
This is an absolute travesty.

Trump continues to menace Iran with threats of more bombings and war, but many believe such an unpopular decision would destroy the Republican Party’s chances in November's midterm elections.
I think most Americans would be outraged, including those that voted for him, because he said that he wasn't going to be starting forever wars, and this is starting a Forever War.
We can't have our government going around the world, bombing poor countries, changing leaders.
I mean, who are we?
It's very arrogant, and it's not going to bring peace and justice to the world.

In an unprecedented protest, some Democratic Party lawmakers boycotted the speech and held an alternative "People's State of the Union."
In a shock development, last week, the Supreme Court overturned the linchpin of Trump's agenda, tariffs. The ruling means that Trump does not have the coercive power he thought he did, especially to advance foreign policy objectives
Trump's drastic weakening, a new trillion dollar hole in the budget and the prospect of over $130 billion in tariff refunds, only adds in more uncertainty to an economic situation which was already exceptionally volatile.
I know from the business I work in how really damaging those tariffs have been, and the best thing that can happen for this country is that we get rid of them.
The understanding of the Republicans of how an economy works is kindergarten level.

Speaking for two hours, Trump beat the previous record for longest State of the Union speech by a whopping 40 minutes.
But many were surprised that he didn't unveil any major policy announcements or changes.
