Amid ongoing protests over the fatal shooting of unarmed Tony Robinson in Madison, Wisconsin just last week, a police officer has shot dead another man in Kenosha, a city in the north-central state of the US.
According to Kenosha Police Department, the man, aged 26, was shot dead on Saturday morning at approximately 9:30.
Officers were trying to arrest the man who had an active felony warrant. The man allegedly armed himself with a weapon when confronted by about 15 police officers one of whom opened fire, killing the suspect.
“We heard some screaming sounded like somebody’s yelling for help and then after that we heard about six shots fired and we ran outside and that`s when we heard that the police shot and killed somebody,” said Gyasi Daniels, who heard the gunfire.
Police have neither released the type of the weapon nor the names of the victim or the officer involved in the shooting, but said the officer was not injured and will remain on leave until the investigation is completed.
The incident is the second police-involved shooting in the US state of Wisconsin over the past 8 days.
Robinson was shot dead by 45-year-old force veteran Matt Kenny in an apartment in Madison on March 6. According to a preliminary autopsy, Robinson was shot in his head, torso and right arm.
Protests have been held in Wisconsin and a number of other US cities over the death of Robinson who was buried on Saturday in a funeral attended by around 1,600 mourners.
His death was the latest in a string of police shootings of unarmed black and Latino people sparking mass protests across the United States.
