The release of Kashmir's prominent pro-independence leader has created a huge uproar across India's political spectrum. Indian Parliament witnessed ruckus over the release of Masarat Alam with prime minister Narendra Modi denouncing the decision as unacceptable.

Alam, who faced over 20 criminal charges, is one of the top pro-independence leaders who spearheaded the 2010 mass protests against Indian rule in the region.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV, Alam expressed surprise over the furore his release has triggered.

India's ruling BJP has sought clarification on Alam's release from Kashmir's federal government of which BJP is a partner.

Pertinently, hundreds of political prisoners are still languishing in various jails across the region. Pro-independence groups and human rights defenders have long been demanding their release.

Press TV has learned from reliable sources that PDP is mulling over releasing other political detenus who do not face criminal charges.
