Egypt's Ministry of Interior said that Mahmoud Ramadan has been executed after being convicted in a case where he was accused of stabbing and throwing off a building a teenage boy in the coastal city of Alexandria.
The incident took place in July 2013 during street fights between and pro and anti Morsi protestors. It was caught on tape causing uproar among Egyptians.
Many in Egypt blame the Muslim Brotherhood for the violence that has gripped the country over the past year and a half and demand harsh penalties against the group.
The group added that there was not enough evidence to support that the man convicted was in fact the same person who appeared in the video during the violent clashes and that he was only found guilty for belonging to the Brotherhood.
After the public announcement of the execution, many fear that it is to set the stage for carrying out such sentences in the near future.
The execution marks a turning point for both sides. Many here believe that such verdicts are used to silence all voices of political dissent.
