As the World celebrates International women’s day, women's groups from India have marched on the streets of Delhi to protest against the government's apathy in dealing with atrocities against women. The country continues to be the scene of sexual violence against women and rape cases continue to make headlines.

Ensuring women’s safety is still a big challenge. Authorities are taking some certain steps in this regard. To this end, some sexual violence laws have already changed.

Their enforcement needs greater involvement. Police forces are taking some training courses in gender sensitivity. Results are not very encouraging. Aspirations are running high.

Women are adopting modern professions. They are demanding gender equality. The demand is put forward quite forcefully.

Observers say there is great urgency to educate societies that discriminate against women, otherwise women will continue to suffer and face crimes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted the indomitable courage and stellar achievements of women on the occasion of International Women's Day .
However modernising society is clashing with the traditional values.Issues are many and there are no easy solutions.Female foetuses are still aborted in large numbers.

Large-scale poverty also hinders any meaningful change. The socio-economic standing of women in India is the lowest among 16 Asia Pacific countries. India has a long way to go before proving equality to women.
