Technical accord will increase pace of Iran nuclear talks: IAEO official

Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Behrouz Kamalvandi

The settlement of technical issues will accelerate progress in Iran’s negotiations with the P5+1 group about Tehran’s nuclear program, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) says.

Speaking to IRNA on Sunday, Behrouz Kamalvandi added that the presence of the AEOI head, Ali Akbar Salehi, and US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz in the recent round of nuclear talks sped up the trend of negotiations toward a permanent nuclear accord.

He, however, emphasized that nuclear talks are not confined to purely technical aspects and that “there are also legal and political issues.”

“Technically speaking, good progress has been made,” Kamalvandi added.

Broken technical deadlock

Kamalvandi’s remarks came a day after the AEOI head said Iran and the P5+1 countries managed to break the deadlock in technical issues between the two sides during the recent nuclear talks in Switzerland.

Salehi said Iran has offered technical assurances on its enrichment activity in Arak reactor, adding that the Iranian negotiating team managed to remove the other side's “fabricated concerns” while safeguarding the country’s national interests and its very nuclear industry.

Salehi and Ernest Moniz held technical negotiations in two Swiss cities of Geneva and Montreux over the past weeks. The inclusion of the two high-ranking energy officials in the talks was regarded as a major step toward sorting out the remaining technical issues before a deadline for Iran and the international powers to reach a deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.

Representatives of Iran and the P5+1 group of countries – the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – wrapped up the latest round of nuclear negotiations in the city of Montreux, Switzerland, on Thursday.

An informed source close to Iran's negotiating team told Press TV's reporter that the next round of talks at ministerial level has been slated for March 15-20.

The two sides are seeking to seal a comprehensive nuclear deal by July 1.
