A Pakistani civilian has been killed during an exchange of fire between Indian and Pakistani troops in an incident, which has been the latest in a series of clashes in the disputed Kashmiri region.

The incident happened on Saturday when the village resident was mowing grass in Rawalakot sector on the Pakistan side of the Line of Control (LoC).

The Pakistani military said in a statement that 60-year-old Muhammad Aslam took three bullets in abdomen as Indian troops opened fire across the disputed Kashmir region, prompting the Pakistani soldiers to retaliate with fire.

India has yet to comment on the incident.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than six decades of hostility between India and Pakistan. The two countries both claim the region in full, but each control only a part of it.

Islamabad and New Delhi have fought two wars over the disputed region since their independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control in 2003, and a year later launched talks aimed at brokering regional peace.

The process was however suspended after over 160 people lost their lives in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based militants.
