Gaza humanitarian crisis
The UN World Food Program urges increased capacity at Gaza’s aid crossings, faster truck clearance, and the opening of additional routes for quicker delivery of aid to the Palestinians in urgent need. The agency’s spokeswoman added that since the ceasefire began, WFP has delivered an average of 560 tons of food per day into Gaza. However, she noted that it still falls short of meeting the needs of people across the strip. Meanwhile, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees is sounding the alarm over soaring food prices in Gaza. In a statement, UNRWA attributed the spike to Israel’s destruction and seizure of agricultural lands in Gaza. The agency added that nearly all farmland in Gaza is now either destroyed or inaccessible. UNRWA emphasized that this has left families without income and pushed food prices to unprecedented levels.
Iran’s nuclear program
Russia says the issue of nuclear non-proliferation oversight regarding Iran must now be removed from the UN Security Council’s agenda following the end of the ten years outlined in the 2015 nuclear deal, also known as the JCPOA. In a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website, Moscow declared that starting Saturday, all restrictions and procedures set forth in Resolution 2231 must be lifted. Russia further stressed that the European troika of the JCPOA has failed in its attempts to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran. Moscow said that future cooperation between Russia and Iran across various sectors will proceed in full compliance with national laws and international obligations. The statement described the JCPOA as a major achievement of international diplomacy. It noted that, however, with the expiration of UNSC Resolution 2231, the 2015 nuclear deal has ultimately become part of history.
US anti-ICE protest
Scuffles have broken out between security forces and people protesting US anti-immigrant policies in Chicago amid President Donald Trump’s nationwide deportation drive. Police arrested several people as protesters gathered outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility. Demonstrators denounced what they called mass deportations and family separations. Tensions have been high in recent weeks in Chicago as the administration of US President Donald Trump has ramped up efforts to deport immigrants living in the US.
