‘Iran stands by Lebanon’
The Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council has met with the Lebanese President and Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker in Beirut. Ali Larijani had separate meetings with the two top Lebanese officials. Upon arrival in Beirut, Larijani emphasized that Iran will always stand by the Lebanese nation. He said both Iran and Lebanon have profound civilizations, adding that the two countries have had close relations in the past centuries. According to Larijani, the Iranian people will feel the pain if the Lebanese nation is in trouble. Larijani landed in Beirut while a group of Lebanese people, waving Hezbollah flags, gave him a welcome near the city’s airport.
Slamming Western sanctions
Iran’s foreign minister says inhumane sanctions by the US and its allies should be regarded as crimes against humanity. In a post on his X social media account, Abbas Araghchi criticized Western states for portraying sanctions as a bloodless alternative to war. He said targeted nations should coordinate efforts to forge a unified and collective response to those sanctions. Araghchi cited a new study published in ‘The Lancet’, which shows unilateral sanctions, especially those imposed by the US, can be as deadly as wars. The study estimated that since the 1970s, over 5,000 people have died each year due to sanctions. According to the study, children and the elderly have been the primary victims.
