Iran's FM set to attend SCO summit in China

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to travel to China on Monday to participate in a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

China will host the foreign ministers of the 10-member regional bloc in the city of Tianjin on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Sunday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that Araghchi is visiting Tianjin at the official invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

In addition to attending the ministerial meeting and outlining Tehran’s positions, Araghchi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Wang and several other foreign ministers participating in the summit, Baghaei noted.

The meeting is expected to cover discussions on SCO cooperation across various sectors, as well as significant regional and international developments.

The foreign ministers will also finalize preparations for the upcoming SCO leaders’ summit.

Top diplomats from Russia, Pakistan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus are also anticipated to attend.

Founded in 2001, the SCO is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance. Iran became a full member of the bloc in 2023.

During his last visit to Beijing on April 23, the Iranian foreign minister praised China as a strategic partner and a “close friend” of the Islamic Republic.

He emphasized that Tehran and Beijing "are resolutely advancing their efforts to safeguard the mutual interests of their nations" by relying on mutual trust and respect.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun also described Araghchi's visit to Beijing as a significant step towards deepening political trust between the two countries.
