Palestinian player succumbs to injuries from Israeli attack on Rafah

Hamdan Imad, the slain 22-year-old Palestinian player from the Shabab Rafah Club

Another Palestinian soccer player has been killed in Israel’s ongoing aggression against the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, raising the death toll of Palestinian athletes to more than 560 over the months-long Israeli onslaught on the besieged territory.

Local media reported that Hamdan Imad, a 22-year-old player from the Shabab Rafah Club, succumbed to his critical wounds on March 8, when he was targeted by a bomb from an Israeli quadcopter in the Brazil neighborhood of Rafah.

The latest statistics from the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) monitoring violations show that the number of martyrs from the sports community has risen to more than 560 since October 7, 2023, including 250 football players.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the Israeli regime in response to its decades-long campaign of oppression against Palestinians.

The regime’s atrocious aggression on Gaza has so far claimed the lives of at least 48,524 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 111,955 others. Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under the rubble.

On November 21 last year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its deadly war on the blockaded coastal sliver.
