Violent clashes broke out between riot police and protesters in Paris on Saturday as thousands took to the streets to mark International Women’s Day.
Footage shows police officers, equipped with shields and helmets, throwing smoke bombs and forcefully detaining demonstrators.
The protest, which drew an estimated 120,000 participants, was initially banned by Parisian police on Wednesday due to public security concerns. However, the Administrative Court of Paris suspended the ban, ruling that the risks of public order disturbances were “not sufficiently justified.”
Demonstrators rallied against gender inequality and feminicide, with the march organised by several groups, including the General Confederation of Labor (CGT).
The event was overshadowed by the presence of the anti-immigration group ‘Nemesis,’ which also planned a march on the same day, sparking opposition from feminist organisations.
