Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Russian and US diplomats will hold a meeting in Istanbul to discuss issues related to the operation of the two countries’ embassies.

The Russian foreign minister said on Wednesday that diplomats from the two countries will meet in Istanbul on Thursday.

Russia has had no ambassador in Washington since the previous envoy, Anatoly Antonov, left his post in October 2024.

“Our diplomats and high-level experts would meet and consider the systemic problems that had accumulated as a result of the illegal activities of the previous (US) administration to create artificial obstacles to the activities of the Russian Embassy,” said Lavrov at a press briefing in Doha, Qatar.

“We naturally reciprocated and also created uncomfortable conditions for the work of the American Embassy in Moscow.”

The meeting follows Russia-US talks in Saudi Arabia last week, which marked an extraordinary shift in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump.

The previous US administration tried to isolate Russia over its conflict with Ukraine.

At the talks in Saudi Arabia, the two parties agreed to start working toward a ceasefire agreement and improve their diplomatic ties, including the restoration of their embassies.

Lavrov said that based on the outcome of the meeting, “it will be clear how quickly and effectively we can move forward.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said high-level teams would work to restore diplomatic missions in Washington and Moscow.
