Israeli forces have shot and killed a young Palestinian man in Tel Aviv, deep inside the Israeli-occupied territories, over an alleged stabbing attack.

The Israel Police claimed in a statement that the Palestinian man had stabbed a man on Levontin Street on Saturday afternoon, seriously injuring him, before being shot and killed by an armed settler at the scene.

The injured settler, a man in his 30s, was taken to Ichilov Hospital in serious condition. The hospital later said his condition was stable and there was no threat to his life.

Kan TV News, the Israeli public broadcaster, identified the Palestinian man as Salah Yahya, 19, from the northern West Bank city of Tulkarm.

A statement from the police said they were looking into the circumstances of the incident.

The alleged stabbing attack occurred just hours before the Gaza ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas resistance movement took effect.

The Israeli regime was forced to agree to the ceasefire deal, accepting Hamas’ longstanding negotiation terms.

The long-awaited ceasefire includes an initial 42-day phase, temporarily halting the more than 15-month-long Israeli genocidal war against Gaza, killing close to 47,000 Palestinians.

As part of the deal, 33 Israeli captives held in the besieged coastal territory will be released in exchange for 735 Palestinian prisoners and 1,167 detainees from Gaza.

According to Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defense, at least 122 Palestinians, including 33 children and 33 women, have been killed and more than 270 others injured in Israeli airstrikes across Gaza following the ceasefire announcement.

On October 7, 2023, Israel, backed by the United States and its Western allies, initiated the Gaza war in response to Hamas’ Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, which aimed to challenge Israel’s decades-long campaign of oppression against Palestinians.

On November 21 last year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
