Despite negotiators signaling that a ceasefire agreement is nearing completion, Israeli airstrikes on densely populated areas in Gaza continue with devastating consequences. Strikes on crowded neighborhoods across Gaza have flattened more residential buildings and claimed numerous lives, including four in Deir el-Balah. Palestinian journalist Mohammed Bashir al-Talmas also succumbed to injuries from an earlier attack in Gaza City, bringing the number of media personnel killed to 204. Since dawn, at least 32 Palestinians have been killed, including 24 in central and southern Gaza. This pushes the Palestinian death toll to over 46,600. More than 11,000 others have been injured.

Iran-Russia relations

The Kremlin says Russia attaches great importance to the signing of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty with Iran. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the comment ahead of a visit by the Iranian President to Moscow this Friday. Russian president, Vladimir Putin and President Masoud Pezeshkian are scheduled to meet on January seventeenth to sign the long-awaited pact. The agreement includes 47 articles covering all aspects of bilateral cooperation. In recent years Iran-Russia trade transaction have substantially grown. Over the past nine months, non-oil trade reached 3.4 million tons valued at nearly $2 billion.

Desperate by poor response

US Officials warn that more strong winds in the forecast for southern California could fuel devastating wildfires, burning in and around Los Angeles. The warning comes as local authorities are still battling with the blazes, considered to be the deadliest California has ever experienced. According to the fire department, only 14% of Palisades’ fire has been contained and that fire fighters have restricted 33% of Eaton fire. The wildfires have claimed 24 lives, with the state authorities being blamed for mismanagement. The infernos have also displaced nearly 100,000 Americans and destroyed over 12,000 structures. Meanwhile, the governor of California has asked for an additional $2.5 billion in funding to deal with the tragedy. President Joe Biden has also asked Congress to set up federal funding, saying $10 billions are required to get Los Angeles back to normal.
