Tehran has dismissed anti-Iran accusations made by the G7 foreign ministers, saying the issues the Western-dominated bloc blames on the Islamic Republic are in fact the consequences of the West’s own misguided policies.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks in reaction to the G7 statement issued at the conclusion of a meeting of foreign ministers in Rome on Tuesday.
The statement condemned Iran’s October missile attack on Israel, which was carried out in response to the regime’s assassination attacks in Iran and Lebanon.
The G7 statement accused Iran of destabilizing West Asia and claimed it would work toward preventing further escalation in the region.
Baghaei said that the accusations reflect the illegal, unjust, unilateral, discriminatory, and coercive approaches of the G7 member states, which have caused irreparable harm to international peace and security.
“A clear example of the consequences of this irresponsible approach is the unwavering support from certain G7 members for Israel’s campaign of genocide and warmongering in Gaza and Lebanon.”
Baghaei said influential members of the G7 have severely undermined the principle of the rule of law in international relations through double standards and selective approaches to various global issues.
“The G7 neither represents the international community nor holds any moral ground to preach given its hypocritical actions regarding gross violations of human rights and humanitarian law worldwide, particularly in occupied Palestine and Lebanon.”
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is entitled to respond to the Zionist regime's aggression against its national sovereignty and territorial integrity based on its inherent right to self-defense—a principle established in both the UN Charter and international law.”
Baghaei lamented that the G7 has adopted an “irresponsible and unethical policy” by ignoring the crimes of Israel in the region while shifting the blame onto victims.
The G7, he added, also targets legitimate resistance groups that are recognized under international law as having the right to fight for self-determination and liberate their nations from occupation and apartheid.
The Iranian spokesperson also rejected allegations in the G7 statement accusing Iran of supplying weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine or committing human rights violations domestically.
Baghaei reaffirmed that Iran remains committed to its responsibility to ensure regional security and stability, emphasizing that it will spare no effort in this regard.
