Mostafa Pourmohammadi, a candidate in Iran’s upcoming presidential election, has called for unity among Muslims in support of the Palestinian nation, particularly the oppressed people in the Gaza Strip.
Pourmohammadi, a former interior and justice minister, made the remarks during an interview with al-Alam news network on Wednesday.
He emphasized the need to establish a new Islamic civilization and restore the dignity and glory of the Islamic world, while calling for solidarity and unity in support of Palestinians.
“Let's join hands to defend each other's rights and strengthen our fraternal relations, develop our common interests, stabilize and reinforce our security and stability,” Pourmohammadi said.
“We should stand united against the enemies and work to defend the oppressed people of Palestine and the people of Gaza and build a new Islamic civilization and restore glory to our Islamic nations,” he added.
His comments come as Israel is continuing its genocidal war on Gaza, which so far has left at least 37,124 Palestinians dead, mostly women and children, and injured 84,712 others since early October last year.
Pourmohammadi is among the six candidates who have been approved by Iran’s Constitutional Council, a 12-member election supervisory body.
Iran will vote for a new president on June 28. The election was called after president Ebrahim Raeisi lost his life along with seven others on May 19, when the helicopter carrying them crashed in northwestern Iran.
Campaigning has officially started for the upcoming election, with the six candidates competing to succeed Raeisi.
The campaign, which includes five live, televised debates on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), will continue until 24 hours before the election.
