Serbian president: 'An important' country meddling in electoral process

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic

Serbia’s president Aleksandar Vucic has accused an "important country" of meddling in the Balkan country's electoral process, which he said was done "in the most brutal way ever".

"I believe that the Serbian authorities are preparing an important letter on the influence and interference of an important country in the electoral process in Serbia in the most brutal way," Vucic said during a televised appearance, after being asked about Germany's criticism of the polls, but did not specify which country.

The letter outlining the charges would likely be published in January, after which “we will be able to send it to the whole world so that they can see how this kind of interference is carried out in processes that should sovereignly belong to an independent state," Vucic was quoted as saying.

According to political experts, Serbia occupies a key strategic juncture in the Balkans at the social, political, and geographic crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe, and the United States wishes to draw Serbia towards the West.

Vucic supports the accession of Serbia to the EU but also wants to retain good relations with Russia and China.

On Thursday, Serbia’s main opposition group, Serbia Against Violence (SPN) urged the European Union to help open an investigation into what it claimed irregularities during last weekend's election, as they claimed an electoral fraud.

In a letter to EU institutions, officials, and member states, the group refused to recognize the results of the elections and also urged the EU to do the same.

Vucic and other ruling party officials denied the claims of vote rigging and said they would do everything to “defend the election will of the people.”

''You can almost never conduct the electoral process to perfection, we had fair elections, they all know that. I have never received more congratulations from other countries. Yes, I respect every vote. And just like that, the electoral will of the people will be respected," Vucic said. "They know that these are real results," he added.

The election results clearly stated a fully fledged victory of Vucic, who has now completely been sworn in as the current president of Serbia.

The result hinted at a victory for Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which has been the ruling political party of Serbia since 2012, as it secured around 46.71 percent of votes in the parliamentary elections, while the leading opposition coalition settled at 23.5 percent.

Moscow "congratulated" Vucic on his party's victory, while Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban saluted his "overwhelming victory". He also received congratulations from France’s  Emmanuel Macron.
