Sudan: The Multifaceted Crisis

This week we are focusing on the ongoing internal military conflict in Sudan, a country that has constantly faced different crises since its independence.

What is ailing the country and are external players involved in fomenting the conflict in Sudan?

Sudan, a country in peril, is strategically located on the Red Sea, a body of water that approximately 10% of global trade passes through.

Sudan is also the site where the White and Blue Nile Rivers merge to form the main River Nile.

The secession of the oil-rich South Sudan in 2011 initiated a declining economic trend. The 75% decrease in oil income resulted in both a trade and fiscal deficit. This led to a rabid devaluation of the national currency, an economic recession since 2018 and sky high inflation.
