In an alleged act of racism, Romania's ambassador to Kenya compared a monkey with Africans during a meeting in Nairobi.
This event took place on April 26 when the Romanian ambassador, Dragos Viorel Tigau was at the United Nations building in the Kenyan capital.
According to a note by the South Sudanese embassy in Kenya, the ambassador pointing towards a black monkey that appeared on the window of the conference room said that the "African group has joined us."
Drawing condemnation from the group of African diplomats placed in Nairobi, Chol Ajong’o, South Sudan’s ambassador to Kenya who leads the group wrote, "The African Group would like to condemn in strongest terms possible the insulting, racist and degrading utterances.”
Conveying his disgust through a tweet, the Kenyan diplomat Macharia Kamau tweeted, "Appalled &disgusted at learning of remarks by Romanian Amb in Nairobi in reference African Group members as monkeys during Eastern European group meeting. Utter shame attempts to cover up this disgrace. This [is] intolerable and unacceptable in any age, let alone (the) 21st century."
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry of Romania said, "We deeply regret this situation and offer our apologies to all those who have been affected”. The ministry added that it has began the process to recall its ambassador from Kenya and hopes that the incident will not affect the ties with the African continent.
