Israel Syria strikes

Syria says it has confronted Israeli missile strikes in the south of the country. According to the defense ministry, the Syrian air defenses intercepted some of the missiles. Earlier, Palestinian resistance group, the Al-Quds Brigades, fired several rockets from Syria toward the occupied Golan Heights. The group says its rocket strikes were in response to Israel’s attacks on the Al-Aqsa mosque. The developments come amid mounting anger over Israeli attacks on Muslim worshipers at the mosque and on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. On Thursday, a barrage of rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel.

Israeli al-Aqsa violations

Israeli settlers have once again stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied east al-Quds; a move seen as provocative by Palestinians. The settlers were under the protection of the Israeli military. Palestinians see such regular incursions as part of Israeli plans to Judaize al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest site. Tensions are currently running high across the occupied territories following attacks by Israeli forces against Palestinian worshippers at the mosque. Hundreds of Palestinians have been injured and arrested. Israeli crimes and aggression have prompted a wave of retaliatory rocket attacks as well as car-ramming and shooting operations.

Tensions over Taiwan

China begins a second day of military drills near Taiwan amid rising tensions over the Taiwanese President’s visit to the US. Beijing says it has deployed dozens of fighter jets and warships around the self-ruled island. The three-day operation dubbed Joint Sword includes rehearsing an encirclement of Taiwan. Beijing says the drills are necessary for safeguarding China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has denounced the drills. While in Los Angeles, she met the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, despite Beijing's warnings. China views self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory.
